MLA vs APA

When I read the articles for MLA and APA, I found a few similarities and differences. Both formats are good to use but should be used for different styles of writing.

The differences:

  • The in-text citations in APA require more than MLA (MLA requires author's last name and the page number; APA requires the author's last name and year separated by a comma)
  • The sources page has different titles. MLA calls it "Works Cited" and APA calls it "References"
  • APA has a title page and MLA does not.
  • MLA requires a header at the beginning of the first page, then a centered title at the beginning of the essay.
  • APA has an abstract page and first level headings for body paragraphs.
The similarities:
  • 12-pt. font and 1" margins.
  • Both styles are double spaced.
  • They both have citation pages.
  • They both list the citations in alphabetical order.
  • Both require in-text citations

Writing Assignment #1 Blog 1/16

The first writing assignment asks us to write an analytical report. We are required to interview a professional or superior to us in our intended field of study. In addition to that, we have to analyze 6 written sources. This assignment is very similar to pieces of writing I have had to turn in for previous English classes. I have written a few analytical essays but never have been required to interview someone for an essay in a class. Although, I have interviewed people for articles in high school. This assignment will be the first time I have to combine analyzing different writings with an interview in one essay.

-      Should I write for a knowledgeable audience that has been in this field and know how to write in the field of study or do I need to give additional background information?
-      How many questions should be asked in our interviews?

-      Is the final assignment due at class time or by the end of the day that it is due?
